For the past 400 years, there have been many shipwrecks off the coast of Florida. These Florida shipwrecks have also been some of the most talked about and dived on artifacts in the history of this historic area. Many of them have been foundered because of enemy action, some simply for the benefits they provide fish and other sea life.

An artificial reef was created off Key Largo by sinking the Spiegel Grove in 2002. It has helped many of the fish and other sea life in this area and is a favorite site for skin divers. This was a creative way to remove this ship from stock yet allow it to sail into history in a helpful way.

Some of the historical additions to the ranks of shipwrecks off this coast are the 1715 sinking of the Urca de Lima. The San Pedro in 1733 and the Nuestra Senora de Atocha that went to the bottom in 1622 are included in this long list

Many of the sunken ships were due to the privateers and pirates that roamed the sea. Many more, of course, were due to World War 2. Some of the ships that are a beautiful addition to the sights of the underwater world come from the many weather events that are not friendly to all ships.

Many of the ships are extremely beautiful representations of the workmanship that dominated the ship building industries in their respective countries. Many others were the work horses of a by gone era. There are associations in the Sunshine State that have documented all of the many details and will conduct tours of each one that is safe to do.

Florida shipwrecks are a fascinating study all their own. The history and beauty that is just below the state’s water surface will give many people all of the information they need.
